Whether you want to get in shape, practice your Canasta skills or make some new friends, the Western Springs Senior Center at the Grand Avenue Community Center is the place to be.
Available for activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, the Senior Center at 4211 Grand Ave. offers activities and events throughout the day, including Seniorcise classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Tai Chi and Wednesdays and Fridays.
The center’s book collection is available during business hours. Members are welcome to choose a book and enjoy it at their leisure.
“There’s no need to bring them back in two weeks,” said Mic Cagney, Senior Center coordinator. She keeps the Senior Center library stocked with old favorites as well as new releases.
In Cagney’s opinion, the Western Springs Senior Center is the best bargain in town. Residents pay just $40 for a yearlong membership that includes access to all Senior Center activities, including exercise classes. Non-residents pay just $50.
Memberships also are available without exercise classes for $10 less.
“We work to make membership an incredible value,” she said.
Prospective members are encouraged to try out the Senior Center by dropping by any time to try the activities or during business hours for questions or advice.
Members also gather regularly to play Mahjongg, and lessons are offered those who are new to the game.
“We’re really focused on education,” said Cagney, who doesn’t stop at games when it comes to offering senior center members a chance to learn something new. Among other things, she offers a genealogy class to help members learn about their lineage.
The Senior Center offers activities and events for the mind, body and spirit, Cagney said, and new members are always welcome. You can find a full calendar of activities and events HERE.
