The Nosek family has guided generations of families through life’s most difficult changes.
Nina Nosek, funeral director at Kuratko-Nosek Funeral Home in North Riverside, is the sixth generation of her family to work in the business of helping families say their final goodbyes to loved ones.
Nosek carries on the family tradition from a newly renovated facility. And while the interior of the building at 2447 Desplaines Ave. has been updated, the size was kept decidedly small. Unlike some larger funeral homes, Nosek maintains a single visitation area so that each family that uses its services has the use of the entire facililty.
“We do one service at a time,” Nosek said. “You won’t run into other families while you’re there for you loved one’s service.”
Families using the funeral home are encouraged to make the space their own with photos, artifacts, music and even favorite dishes to help them say their final farewells.
“We try to accommodate any way we can,” Nosek said.
That includes services to honor a military veteran with buglers, color guards, rifle salutes, bagpipes or even a full military funeral at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
Another service of the North Riverside funeral home is the ability to help families arrange and pay for services before they are needed. Pre-planning can include anything from choosing burial over cremation to a detailed plan for a service.
“It makes it less stressful for the family when the time comes,” Nosek said.
Pre-paid funerals also can have a cost savings, because prices are locked in at the time the service is planned.
Nosek said the funeral home’s services don’t end when the funeral is over. After-care specialists are available to help families with things like insurance claims, social security benefits and death certificates.
“We can help them with that paperwork,” she said.
As an extension of their post-funeral support, Nosek has recently partnered with Home Helpers of Hinsdale to help the widows and widowers they serve adapt to life without their partner. People who lose a spouse can receive 12 free hours of home care, three free home-delivered meals and 30 days of electronic personal monitoring to help them adjust in the days following the funeral.
