Icy sidewalks and snow-covered paths make walking in winter more than inconvenient. It can be downright dangerous!
But that doesn’t mean you have to hang up your walking shoes. Indoor tracks offer a safe and warm place to exercise this winter, and at little or no cost!
Here are a few to consider.
The Darien Sportsplex, 451 Plainfield Road, allows guests to use the facility’s indoor soccer field as a walking track FREE every weekday morning from 8 to 10:30 a.m.
It is best to call ahead, however, as scheduled programs are sometimes taking place.

You don’t have to be a member of The Community House in Hinsdale to take advantage of its indoor walking track. Non-members can buy a daily walking pass for just $1
The track is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and hours vary on weekends. Call (630) 323-7500 for more information.
LaGrange Recreation Center
A daily walking pass is available to La Grange residents for $3 and to non-residents for $5.
A yearlong pass is available to senior residents for $22.
La Grange Park District’s new Neighborhood Network passes allow residents of Brookfield, Countryside, La Grange Highlands, La Grange Park, McCook and Western Springs to purchase yearlong passes at a reduced rate of $25.
The track is open 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sundays.

Be a Mall Walker
The mall isn’t just for shopping.
North Riverside Mall, in cooperation with MacNeal Hospital, offers a free walking club that encourages seniors and others to keep in shape all year long.
The mall opens early at 6:30 a.m. every day to accommodate walkers. But of course, walkers are welcome any time the mall is open.
